SolBar Sundaze - Pre UK Tour gig!

SUNNY COAST RUDE BOYS

PRE-UK TOUR SHOW @ SOLBAR – SUNDAY 15 JUNE

Our first ever ALL AGES Sunday arvo gig! That meant loading gear into the venue at 10AM. Yes. 10. In the morning. Not very ska. Not very rock ‘n’ roll. Not even very awake. The full 14-piece band arrived: bleary-eyed, over-caffeinated, and moving like confused wombats emerging from hibernation.

Big love to Brian & Joel on sound, who helped transform this circus into a stage-worthy machine. Horn section warmed up their chops. Beer and breakfast pizza were consumed (at 11:45am, because hydration and carbs are important & beer isn't JUST for breakfast).

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

For a support act, we invited three bands from The Eumundi School of Music took the stage (run by the legendary ARIA Winning national treasure that is Katie Noonan). And holy moly – these kids were good. Like actually good. Like, “are we being replaced by teenagers?” good.

  • The Greater Good floated on stage and charmed the crowd like over talented cherubs.

  • Karma Police brought attitude, swagger, and serious chops.

  • And Unmuted finished off with a James Brown cover so tight it made our drummer do a nervous squaeky fart.

The tiger mums were beaming. So were we. As crusty, seasoned musos, it’s genuinely important to us to give the next gen a leg up. Maybe one day they too can experience the joys of lugging amps into a van at 3am with a dodgy back and ringing ears.

RUDE BOYS UNLEASHED

After a lovely heartfelt intro from industry legend Dicko, we hit the stage – and all hell broke loose. Horn players flying off drum risers. Singalongs. Chaos. Glory.

We even meant to give a prize to the best dancer, but… we forgot. (Oops.) So if you were busting moves on Sunday, worthy of a trophy – DM us. First in, best dressed.

New tune ‘Moonlight’ got a sweet reception – a sunshine-reggae love ballad written by lead singer Mick about his “ex-girlfriend” (aka his wife of 20 years, but hey – she was his girlfriend once. Dad jokes for dayzz......).

We threw in covers from The Specials, Madness and Bad Manners, to satisfy the 2Tone faithful, then tore into ‘El Rollo’ – our ska/punk tribute to the legendary Brentyn Rollason of Blowhard. People always share stories and memories with us after that one. It’s more than a song – it’s a celebration of a much-loved legend.

CLOSING TIME (OR IS IT?)

We wrapped up with ‘RUDEBOY TAKEOVER’, a 2Tone-flavoured banger written about Solbar itself (“by the corner on Ocean Street” – you know the one). THEN we played the classic ‘A Message to You Rudy’ – joined by FOUR young horns from earlier in the day. That’s 13 horn players on stage & wandering out into the audience too. We’re one short of forming a brass army.

Fake exit? Yep. Encore? Of course. We closed with brand new tune ‘BIG NIGHT OUT’, co-written by Mick, Hayden Andrews (Cheap Fakes), and a killer horn riff from 16-year-old sax slinger Sive Hughes – next-gen ska royalty in the making.

WRAP IT UP!

Vinyls were signed, T-shirts were sold, guitars were packed. Lots of handshakes, hugs & "good luck in the UK! I've told me mates!" Shouts of “SEE YA IN LONDON!” bounced around the green room like a ska echo chamber. Our bass player Steve? He went straight from the gig to the airport. That fella is probably having tea with King Charles by now.

If you’ve got mates in the UK, tell them to catch us while they can. Original Aussie Surf Ska – Sunny Coast Rude Boys are coming in hot!
